Regulations for overboard water discharge vary depending upon:
Dirty Water Source
Machinery space bilge water must meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regulation MEPC.107(49) of under 15 ppm. Deck drain and slop waters may be held to a different standard, depending on regional regulations.
Regulations for other wastewater (slop water, deck drain fluids and produced water) of offshore vessels vary from 100 ppm to 15 ppm of oil content in water, depending on regional or coastal government authority, and generally require that the discharge be 40 ppm or less of oil content in water on average.
System Configuration
Offshore support vessels, drilling rigs, FPSOs, FSOs and production platforms are being subjected to more stringent requirements for overboard discharge depending regional requirements, owner preference and internal company environmental policies.
Systems that operate using a single point of treatment and single point of discharge will be held to the more stringent standard.
Geography
Different areas of the world have varying regulations and expectations regarding the protection of their ocean environment.
Regulatory
There are also a variety of enforcement authorities which offshore operators must comply with:
• International Maritime Organization (IMO)
• Institute Brazil Medio Ambiente (IBAMA)/CONAMA
• International Commission for Offshore
• HELCOM 1974;
• PARCOM 1988 & OSPAR Convention 1992

“Green/Clean” Company Responsibility
In keeping with the developing sensitivity to environmental stewardship, many companies are striving for ISO 14001 to establish environmental management systems to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner. Discharge levels set by these companies are either less than 5 ppm oil content in water or “zero harmful discharge”.
Whatever your offshore operations demand for the overboard discharge treatment of deck drain, slop and bilge waters, Compass Water Solutionshas a solution.
